Beginning with a desire to be an independent entity and own their office space, the three doctor-partners, who were leaving the Berkshire Medical Center, invited RDL Enterprise, Inc. to manage the construction of their new Endoscopy Center located in downtown Pittsfield. The new facility consists of 5,000 square feet of floor space, as well as 900 square feet of unfinished space.
The 5,000 square foot structure has a steel and concrete skeleton with metal stud in-fill walls. Its overlapping textures and patterns are evident in the exterior masonry and unique arches. The rubber membrane roof has two heat recovery ventilators, and roof top heating and cooling units with heat recovering ventilation systems packaged by Carrier. Two water source heat pumps are located inside. The computer controlled building management system ensures peak operating efficiency with generator backups.
The clinical side of the facility's interior consists of a procedural suite which has two operating rooms and nine post op care/recovery rooms; treatment suites, and a decontamination suite.
Much different than the shared spaces of their previous location, the administrative side of the facility offers the staff a spacious employee break room, physician consulting rooms and offices, billing area, and men's and women's staff locker rooms. Great emphasis was placed on using brightly colored spaces and exciting patterns in an attempt to use visuals to ease the patients' fears.
The project included the installation of a building-wide fire suppression system that included a complete sprinkler head system, alarms, fire-resistant rated floors, walls and petitions, and smoke barriers with automatic doors.
Groundbreaking took place in early 2001. Approximately 100% of the work was performed by RDL Enterprise's own work force and management team. Construction took 10 months -- completing two months ahead of schedule. This allowed the staff to relocate and begin operating out of their very own spacious facility by fall of 2001.
